About our Organization: The City of Northfield adopted our Climate Action Plan in November 2019. The plan includes a variety of strategies and actions to reduce (mitigate) greenhouse gas emissions, which includes carbon-neutral strategies such as sequestration and offsets and to help our community adapt and become more resilient to the effects of climate change. Climate Change Impacts is one of the six priority areas of the City’s 2018-2020 Strategic Plan.

Values around Earth Day: The City is pleased to support this Earth Day celebration and all the amazing actions being carried out by members of our community. To read the plan and learn more about actions you can take go to the City of Northfield website at www.ci.northfield.mn.us/sustainability

Carleton College Sustainability Office and Center for Community and Civic Engagement

About our Organization: The 2011 Climate Action Plan for Carleton addresses the College’s commitment to carbon emissions to be carbon neutral by 2050. However, sustainability efforts began long before that. Carleton installed not only one, but two commercial-sized wind turbines, a solar photovoltaic and solar thermal array, and is currently in the process of switching the campus district heating system from steam to hot water using geothermal technology. Our team spans both the Sustainability Office and the Center for Community and Civic Engagement, with a total of 15 student staff and multiple student organizations working on sustainability initiatives both on and off-campus.

Values around Earth Day: Carleton has been a part of the Earth Day celebrations since the very first Earth Day, planting over 30,000 trees in the Cowling Arboretum, many of which we still enjoy today! We are so excited to partner with the Northfield Earth Day planning committee on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

Clean River Partners
Resilience, Equity, and Engagement

About our Organization: We partner with people and organizations to value, protect, and improve the region’s land and water. Clean Water Happens through our annual river CleanUP, by helping farmers and landowners put more conservation on their land, and by helping clean up stormwater before it reaches the river. Do you share our values, too? Then join us at www.CleanRiverPartners.org

Values around Earth Day: CRP’s core values are resilience, equity, and engagement. We believe everyone should be able to swim and fish in heathy rivers and lakes and drink clean water from our wells. We know that our rivers, lakes, and farm fields are more resilient and able to handle climate change challenges like flooding when the water is clean and the soil is healthy. By investing in clean water and conservation projects today, we can strengthen our rivers, lakes, and farm fields to better survive the ongoing challenges of a changing climate.

About our Organization: Northfield Curbside Compost is a group of passionate people dedicated to finding local solutions to environmental and social issues. Our mission is to reduce waste filling up the Rice County landfill and lower local greenhouse gas emissions, while creating quality local jobs and providing an excellent service for our customers! We started collecting compost in the summer of 2017 after years of research and planning. Learn more at www.northfieldcompost.com

About our Organization: Northfield Area Community Solar (NACS) promotes environmental sustainability and climate justice in the Northfield area and beyond, primarily by growing the community solar garden movement with our partner Novel Energy

About our Organization: The League of Women Voters Northfield-Cannon Falls (LWVNCF) is a grassroots affiliate of LWVUS, a national organization known for non-partisan political education and advocacy. As a local League, we are concerned with climate change and have provided educational programs addressing the issue.

Values around Earth Day: The League’s environmental goals aim to prevent ecological degradation, and to reduce and control pollutants before they go down the sewer, up the chimney or into the landfill. We support vigorous enforcement mechanisms, including sanctions for states and localities that do not comply with federal standards as well as substantial fines for noncompliance.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby

About Our Organization: Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy climate change organization focused on national policies to address climate change.  In order to generate the political will necessary for passage of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act we train and support volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, the media and their local community.

Values Around Earth Day:  We exist to create the political will for climate change solutions by enabling individual breakthroughs in the exercise of personal and political power.
